‘Solar Storm’: ‘Saw V’ Director David Hackl Sets Next Thriller During a 24-Hour Blackout

Director David Hackl, best known to horror fans for Saw V, is heading into darker territory with his next feature, Solar Storm, a new neo-noir action thriller set against a citywide blackout.

Jack Hudson (The Devil’s Train) and Lorena Andrea (Warrior Nun) will lead the cast.

The story unfolds over one catastrophic day, following Joe (Hudson), an ex-convict determined to escape his troubled past. His plans take a dangerous turn when he crosses paths with Jasmine (Andrea), a woman desperately trying to escape a violent marriage.

Then the lights go out.

A massive solar storm—the largest ever recorded—knocks out electricity and communications across the city, sending society into chaos. As the blackout stretches on, looting and riots erupt, and the streets become increasingly dangerous.

Joe and Jasmine are forced to run for their lives through 24 hours of darkness, with the distinction between hunter and hunted rapidly disappearing. But the storm may not be the most dangerous thing waiting for them in the darkness.

The cast also features Massi Furlan (Jumanji: The Next Level), Valerie Huber (Whiskey Cavalier), and Werner Daehn (The Lives of Others).

Joe Rabl wrote the screenplay, describing the movie as a relentless pressure cooker built around two strangers who have no choice but to depend on each other to survive.

“One day. No power. No rules. Two people who need each other to survive.”

With Hackl behind the camera, Solar Storm sounds like it could deliver a nasty combination of action, survival horror, and neo-noir tension—all unfolding against a world plunged into complete darkness.

And when the lights go out, it sounds like the real nightmare begins.
