One of the internet’s most infamous horror icons is finally coming for the big screen.

Following the success of Kane Parsons’ Backrooms, another internet-born nightmare is being developed as a feature film: Jeff the Killer.

According to TheWrap, Tongal and filmmaker Savanah Moss (Funny Bunny) are teaming up to bring the legendary Creepypasta character to theaters.

And this time, the internet gets a chance to help shape the nightmare.

Tongal is inviting creators to contribute ideas for the upcoming movie, including Jeff’s motivation, overall vibe, and signature killing technique. Submissions are being accepted through Tongal as the project takes shape.

The film will mark Tongal’s first feature-length horror movie.

“Jeff the Killer is a foundational figure of the Creepypasta genre — horror urban legends that emerged across the early internet,” Tongal explains. “Now, Tongal and Savanah are collaborating to turn Jeff the Killer into a movie — and our first step is to ask our awesome communities to help us establish what makes him tick… kill.”

For Moss, the project is a chance to bring a character she grew up with into a new era of horror.

“I grew up reading Jeff the Killer and all of the creepypasta horror stories, so there’s definitely a nostalgic connection for me,” Moss told TheWrap.

The filmmaker has even incorporated Jeff into some of her previous Fever Dream videos, making the jump to a feature film a particularly surreal experience.

“What I’ve always loved about Jeff is how much of the character was built by the internet,” Moss said. “Jeff stuck with people and became an internet icon.”

Over the years, countless fans have added their own interpretations to Jeff’s story, creating multiple versions of the character and his origins.

That collaborative history is something Moss hopes to preserve while bringing a more grounded approach to the big screen.

“We have this unique opportunity to take the character everyone knows and loves and create a truly terrifying, grounded horror film, while still staying true to Jeff’s origin,” she said.

“I don’t just want to recreate the creepypasta — I want to make Jeff feel terrifyingly real.”

Who Is Jeff the Killer?

Jeff the Killer first emerged online in 2008 and quickly became one of the defining figures of the early Creepypasta era.

The character is typically depicted as a disturbed 13-year-old boy who becomes a killer after a violent confrontation with bullies leaves him horribly burned and psychologically broken.

His most infamous calling card is the chilling phrase “go to sleep”, whispered to his victims before he kills them.

Now, nearly two decades after Jeff first began haunting the internet, the character is getting the feature-film treatment.

Tongal has previously worked with major brands and entertainment companies to develop creator-driven projects, including the award-winning Piece by Piece, which was released theatrically in 2024.

Moss has built a following of more than 15 million fans through her distinctive “fever dream” style storytelling and horror-inspired content, including the recent short Funny Bunny.

There’s currently no release date for Jeff the Killer, but considering how deeply the character is rooted in internet horror culture, this could be one Creepypasta adaptation worth watching.
