A disturbing cult, a filmmaker chasing the truth, and something much darker waiting underneath. Alfonso Cuarón is bringing Adam Nevill’s horror novel Last Days to Apple TV+ with Ascension.

Apple TV+ is diving deeper into horror with Ascension, a new cult horror series inspired by Adam Nevill’s acclaimed 2012 novel Last Days.

The series comes from Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, the director behind Children of Men and Gravity, with Outlander star Caitríona Balfe leading the cast.

Cuarón is co-writing the series alongside his brother Carlos Cuarón, as well as Natalie Erika James (Relic, Apartment 7A) and Christian White (Relic, Apartment 7A). James and White will serve as co-showrunners, with James also directing the series.

Ascension follows Rose, a recently divorced mother and relentless documentary filmmaker who has built her career on exposing other people’s secrets while struggling with the unresolved problems in her own life.

Her latest investigation takes her into the terrifying world of the Church of Ascension, a mysterious 20th-century cult. What begins as another documentary project slowly becomes something far more personal when Rose finds herself drawn to the group’s teachings.

But the deeper she goes, the more she realizes that there may be something sinister hiding beneath the surface.

Nevill’s Last Days is a documentary-style horror story that draws inspiration from infamous real-world cults and figures including Jim Jones and Charles Manson, blending investigative filmmaking with increasingly disturbing supernatural horror.

For Cuarón, Ascension represents a project that has been a long time coming. The filmmaker previously attempted to develop a television adaptation of Last Days back in 2017, with Casey Affleck attached to star.

Now, nearly a decade later, the project has finally found its way to Apple TV+.

With Cuarón behind the series and James and White handling showrunning duties, Ascension could be one to watch for horror fans looking for something darker and more psychologically unsettling.
