While audiences were watching monsters and supernatural horrors unfold in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, many IMAX viewers were also treated to an early glimpse at another terrifying story.

Attached to screenings of Nolan’s epic was a trailer for Other Mommy, the upcoming adaptation of Josh Malerman’s bestselling horror novel Incidents Around the House.

The trailer is now available online, giving fans a better look at Rob Savage’s latest supernatural nightmare—and Jessica Chastain’s terrifying dual performance as both Bela’s mother and the entity known as Other Mommy.

With Savage behind the camera following films like Host and The Boogeyman, the adaptation is already one of the more anticipated horror releases of the year. But the trailer also suggests that the movie is making some significant changes from Malerman’s original novel.

Here are four of the biggest details we noticed.

4. Rob Savage Is Returning to Supernatural Horror

Rob Savage became a breakout name in horror with 2020’s Host, a supernatural film that became a major success during the pandemic.

While Other Mommy is not a found-footage movie, the trailer suggests Savage is returning to the kind of paranormal horror that helped establish his reputation.

Strange activity around the home, objects seemingly moving on their own, and the unsettling presence of something that should not be there all point toward a story that goes far beyond a traditional creature feature.

The source novel also includes a full-blown exorcism, suggesting that the film could become increasingly supernatural as Bela’s situation spirals out of control.

3. Other Mommy Appears to Be a More Convincing Doppelgänger

One of the unsettling elements of Incidents Around the House was that the entity pretending to be Bela’s mother was not always particularly convincing.

Its appearance and behavior could be subtly—but unmistakably—wrong, creating an uncanny sense that something was seriously off inside the family.

The movie appears to be taking a different approach.

Jessica Chastain’s version of Other Mommy seems capable of physically imitating Bela’s mother almost perfectly. That could create an entirely different kind of tension, particularly as Bela and her father, played by Jay Duplass, are forced to question which version of “Mommy” they can actually trust.

2. Bela’s Family Appears to Be in a Different Place

Malerman’s novel explored more than supernatural terror. The story also contained themes involving isolation, family problems, and the pressures affecting Bela’s home life before the entity ever appeared.

The trailer, however, seems to present the family as being in a more stable position when the nightmare begins.

That change could allow the movie to build a more dramatic fall from normality as secrets emerge and the family’s situation begins to collapse.

The more Bela becomes trapped in Other Mommy’s world, the more the film appears to suggest that the real horror may involve everything the family has been trying to keep hidden.

1. Jessica Chastain Looks Ready to Unleash Her Inner Deadite

There is something deeply disturbing about the idea of a mother turning against her own child—and horror has repeatedly proven how effective that fear can be.

Jessica Chastain appears to be taking that concept to some extremely dark places in Other Mommy.

The trailer’s more terrifying moments may even remind some viewers of Alyssa Sutherland’s unforgettable performance as Ellie in Evil Dead Rise. Like Sutherland’s character, Chastain appears to be exploring the horrifying transformation of a mother into something entirely unrecognizable.

Of course, the two characters are very different. But the same disturbing energy is clearly present.
