Uwe Boll Revives ‘Alone in the Dark’ With New Film — TV Series Also in Play

Uwe Boll isn’t done dragging video game horror back into the dark.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the notoriously divisive German filmmaker has optioned the rights to reboot Alone in the Dark, setting up a new feature film — and potentially a television series — based on the long-running horror-action franchise.

The Alone in the Dark series, heavily inspired by the cosmic dread of H.P. Lovecraft, follows paranormal investigator Edward Carnby as he battles the undead, ancient evils, and things better left buried. The franchise has spawned multiple games over decades and sold millions of copies worldwide.

Boll, who previously directed the widely criticized 2005 Alone in the Dark adaptation starring Christian Slater and Tara Reid, insists this time will be different. According to the report, the new film will stick far closer to the source material — specifically drawing from last year’s Alone in the Dark game, which features performances by Jodie Comer and David Harbour.

The 2024 game is set in the 1920s American South, centering on the decaying halls of Derceto Manor. Players step into the roles of Emily Hartwood and Edward Carnby as they investigate the disappearance of Emily’s uncle, unraveling the manor’s cursed history while confronting nightmarish entities lurking within its walls.

“We will capture the spirit and the era of the original games and follow the story of the new game,” Boll said. “We can’t wait to reboot the franchise and cast our new Edward Carnby.”

And the resurrection may not stop with a single film.

Boll’s producing partner Michael Roesch confirmed that a television series is also part of the plan, suggesting Boll’s Alone in the Dark revival could stretch across multiple formats.

Boll’s career has been defined by video game adaptations — for better or worse — including House of the Dead, BloodRayne, Far Cry, and In the Name of the King. He’s also gearing up for Return to Zombie Island, a sequel to House of the Dead (unrelated to Paul W.S. Anderson’s upcoming reboot).

Of course, Boll is also infamous for stepping into the boxing ring with his online critics — and winning. Between renewed interest in video game adaptations thanks to hits like The Minecraft Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog, Boll appears ready to swing again, both behind the camera and, if history repeats itself, in the ring.

Whether this Alone in the Dark reboot is a redemption arc or another blood-soaked curiosity remains to be seen.
