Folklore Hunter Tracks Down the Mothman in Full 1.0 Release Jan. 30, 2026
Fans of co-op horror and urban legends, your next nightmare is almost here. Folklore Hunter, the survival game developed by New Zealand’s Liquid Donkey Games, is leaving Steam Early Access behind and hitting PC via Steam on January 30, 2026, with console versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch planned for later in the year.
The game was showcased with a brand-new trailer at DreadXP’s Indie Horror Showcase, teasing the hunt for one of the most elusive cryptids of all: the Mothman.
Hunt Mythic Creatures with Friends (or Alone)
In Folklore Hunter, players are called to investigate the unexplainable: missing fathers, cursed villages, abandoned military labs, and other sites steeped in supernatural horror. You’ll track three legendary creatures—the horned Wendigo, vampiric Strigoi, and the newly added Mothman—across handcrafted environments including dark forests, caves, cult lairs, abandoned churches, and sealed catacombs.
Set traps, deploy cameras, solve cryptic riddles, and uncover hidden storylines to survive. But beware—the creatures are hunting you, too.
Whether playing solo or with friends in online co-op, your team must combine wit, intuition, and a variety of tools—shotguns, crossbows, explosive gas cans, crucifixes, and even runes—to outsmart the nightmarish threats.
Custom Content & Replayability
PC players now have full Steam Workshop support, allowing the creation and sharing of custom maps, hunts, and mods. The main campaign features three story-driven hunts, while Contract Hunts offer shorter, randomized missions for replayability, rewards, and gear upgrades. Each hunt encourages experimentation with hunting techniques, traps, and survival strategies, making every encounter unique.
“There are so many approaches to hunting these supernatural beings,” said Jayde Cohen, Founder and sole developer at Liquid Donkey Games. “How you use them? That’s a story for you to tell.”
Why Horror Fans Should Be Excited
Folklore Hunter blends co-op camaraderie with spine-chilling urban legends, delivering a survival horror experience where bullets alone won’t solve every problem. From uncovering the origins of cryptids to surviving encounters with otherworldly threats, the game offers a deeply immersive, emergent storytelling experience.
With its 1.0 launch on PC this January and consoles later in 2026, Folklore Hunter is shaping up to be a must-play for fans of cooperative horror, urban legend lore, and interactive survival experiences.
