Netflix Promises the Premiere of “Squid Game” Season 2 This Year

The popular series “Squid Game” is set to make a comeback with its highly anticipated Season 2 on Netflix, according to a letter to shareholders obtained by Variety. Netflix has revealed in the letter that the planned release for Season 2 is scheduled for this year.

Here is an excerpt from the detailed letter shared by Netflix, as reported by Variety:

As we look forward to 2024, despite some setbacks last year due to strikes affecting certain releases, we are proud to present a robust and exciting slate. Viewers can expect a diverse selection, including returning favorites like The Diplomat S2, Bridgerton S3, Squid Game S2, and Empress S2. Unscripted series such as Tour de France: Unchained S2, Love is Blind S6, F1: Drive to Survive S6, and Full Swing S2 are also part of the lineup. Additionally, new shows like 3 Body Problem (adapted from the best-selling novel by the Game of Thrones showrunners), Griselda (starring Sofia Vergara, premiering this week), The Gentlemen (from Guy Ritchie), Eric (starring Benedict Cumberbatch), Avatar: The Last Airbender, Cien Años de Soledad from Colombia based on the novel by Gabriel García Márquez, and Senna from Brazil are set to captivate audiences.

On the film front, the slate includes the Rebel Moon sequel, Back in Action with Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, Carry On from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment starring Jason Bateman and Taron Edgerton, Spellbound from producer John Lasseter, Eddie Murphy reprising his role in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, and Six Triple Eight starring Kerry Washington and directed by Tyler Perry.

Returning to “Squid Game” Season 2, the ensemble cast, curated by director Hwang Dong-hyuk (Emmy winner for the first season), features a mix of rising stars and seasoned actors. Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo will reprise their roles, joined by newcomers Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun.

Additional cast members include:

  • Park Gyu-young, known for her role in Netflix series Sweet Home, and set to star in the upcoming Netflix series Celebrity.
  • Jo Yu-ri, a singer and actress, formerly a member of the South Korean-Japanese girl group Iz*One.
  • Kang Ae-sim, a highly respected theater and musical actress in Korea, known for her impactful performances in TV series Be Melodramatic and Netflix series Move to Heaven.
  • Lee David, recognized for supporting roles in director Hwang’s film The Fortress and the film Svaha: The Sixth Finger.
  • Lee Jin-uk, known for starring in Netflix series Sweet Home and various Korean dramas and films, including director Hwang’s film Miss Granny.
  • Choi Seung-hyun, a singer and actor with credits in various Korean films and TV series such as Tazza: The Hidden Card and Commitment.
  • Roh Jae-won, making his acting debut in 2021 and gaining recognition through films like Missing Yoon and Ditto.
  • Won Ji-an, who made an impressive debut on the first season of the Netflix series D.P.

The South Korean series, known for its intriguing premise of cash-strapped players participating in deadly children’s games, promises a thrilling survival experience with a staggering 45.6 billion-won prize at stake. “Squid Game” is the creation of Hwang Dong-hyuk.

In addition to the sequel, the reality series “Squid Game: The Challenge” is also confirmed to receive a second season.
