The singer and actress, who appeared in MaXXXine, is co-writing and starring in Replacer, a new psychosexual horror movie from director Avan Jogia (Backrooms, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City).

The film has now added Karl Glusman (Watcher, The Neon Demon) and Juliette Gariépy (Red Rooms) to its cast. According to Deadline, the additions come just before production gets underway, with filming scheduled to begin in Montreal later this month.

Halsey plays Proxy, a troubled DJ who becomes stranded in Montreal. While there, she crosses paths with an alluring artist and his friends, who run an underground radio station.

Things take a very strange turn when the station’s broadcast begins picking up a mysterious signal buried somewhere beneath the city’s subway system.

From there, Proxy finds herself caught up in something much more disturbing than she bargained for.

The official synopsis reads:

“Stranded in Montreal, Proxy (Halsey), a troubled DJ, meets an alluring artist and his group of friends who run an underground radio station. The station’s broadcast becomes warped by a mysterious signal hidden deep beneath the city’s subway system.”

“Proxy must escape before the sound turns her, and her new friends, into something raw, primal, and unrecognizable.”

The movie is being described as a psychosexual horror film, although it sounds like Replacer isn’t sticking to just one genre.

Executive producer Lilly Wachowski described the script from Jogia and Halsey as a strange mix of horror, thriller, and comedy, set within a rarely seen side of Montreal’s underground culture.

“Avan and Halsey’s script is a surreal hyper-dive into a twitchy, conspiratorial genre mashing snarl of horror/thriller/comedy,” Wachowski said.

She also cited filmmakers including David Cronenberg, Alex Cox, Tony Scott, and John Carpenter as influences on the project.

Jogia describes the movie as “a bright and electric club horror” combined with a more vulnerable story about finding a sense of belonging and community.

“Come together. Leave as one,” the director teased.

German producer and composer Alex Ridha is also on board and will provide the score for the film.

Replacer begins filming in Montreal later this month. There’s currently no release date.
