Chucky franchise standout Fiona Dourif leads the cast alongside Julia Batelaan, Yasmin Blake, and Lloydd Hamwijk in the mind-bending indie feature that blends psychological horror with low-fi science fiction.
The film follows Max, a young woman who gains access to a mysterious futuristic device that allows her to enter the mind of her dying girlfriend. As Max searches for a crucial memory that could save her lover’s life, she finds herself trapped inside a fractured subconscious, stalked by a man they believed was long dead.
Psychonaut is written and directed by Thijs Meuwese (Molly), who also produces alongside Monne Tuinhout and David Grover.
“Psychonaut is a trippy microbudget drama with elements of science fiction and horror,” Meuwese explained. “It lives in the same space as films like Pi, Following, Primer, and The Lighthouse. Designed to blur the boundaries between reality, dream, and memory, the film is a gritty dive into the human subconscious and the formative moments of our lives.”
The project is backed by The Dutch Angle Project, Falcon Grove Productions, Branded Cinema, and Get Off the Road.
In his review out of the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, critic Daniel Kurland noted that Psychonaut “deserves credit for shooting for the moon,” though its ambition ultimately causes it to “fall short and end up out of orbit.”
Psychonaut is set for a U.S. release later this year via Studio Dom, while Fizz-e-Motion will handle international sales at the European Film Market in Berlin next month.
