‘Lights Out 2’ Is Officially in Development at New Line
It’s been ten long years since Lights Out 2 was first announced—only a week after the original film terrified audiences in 2016—and then… nothing. Silence. Until now.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the long-dormant sequel has finally sparked back to life at New Line Cinema. Screenwriter Connor Osborne McIntyre (Animals) has been tapped to pen the script.
Behind the scenes, familiar names are returning to the shadows. Lawrence Grey, Eric Heisserer, and David F. Sandberg are all producing, alongside James Wan’s Atomic Monster.
The original Lights Out marked Sandberg’s feature debut, expanding on his viral short film that proved darkness itself could be deadly. Written by Heisserer, the film followed a family haunted by a supernatural presence that only appears when the lights go out—a simple concept that delivered pure nightmare fuel.
Released on a modest $5 million budget, the film exploded at the box office, pulling in a massive $149 million worldwide and cementing itself as one of the most profitable horror hits of the decade.
Back in 2023, Sandberg hinted at an earlier version of the sequel that picked up shortly after the original events—but time has changed everything. With Martin no longer a child, any continuation would likely jump forward, embracing that decade-long gap in real time.
Now, after years in development hell, Lights Out 2 is finally flickering back to life.
And this time… the darkness has had years to grow.
