The iconic Magic 8 Ball, a beloved novelty toy created by Mattel in the 1950s, is set to make its big-screen debut with a feature-length movie adaptation.

Four years ago, Mattel and Blumhouse announced their collaboration to bring the toy to life in a live-action film, with director Jeff Wadlow (known for “Truth or Dare”) attached to the project.

While the current status of Blumhouse and Wadlow’s involvement remains unclear, a recent feature in the New Yorker focusing on Barbie revealed that “Jimmy Warden, the screenwriter of Cocaine Bear, has crafted a horror-comedy concept for the Magic 8 Ball.”

According to Robbie Brenner, the head of Mattel Films, there have been discussions about the approach to the Magic 8 Ball movie. She assured that they would not produce any rated-R films and emphasized their commitment to creating content that is family-friendly and not excessively violent. Brenner stated, “We want to stay within the parameters of what Mattel is.”

The previous draft of the script was written by Wadlow, Jillian Jacobs, and Chris Roach.

The initial press release described the film as “suspense-filled,” and while the details of the plot are yet to be revealed, it is expected to deliver a thrilling and comedic experience centered around the enigmatic Magic 8 Ball.
