Earlier this year, Disney officially confirmed the production of “Hocus Pocus 3,” with Anne Fletcher, who directed “Hocus Pocus 2,” returning to helm the project, and Jen D’Angelo back in the saddle to craft the screenplay.

As we find ourselves one year removed from the premiere of “Hocus Pocus 2,” fans are eager for an update on the status of the third installment. Jen D’Angelo recently shared insights with Entertainment Weekly.

“We’re still in the story phase, we’re still working on it. We’ve been working on some ideas, and it’s been fun to dive back into that world and we have so many directions in which to go and so many new characters to explore,” D’Angelo informed the outlet. She added, “We’ve only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham’s mother witch.”

Hannah Waddingham’s character, Mother Witch, was introduced in a flashback sequence during “Hocus Pocus 2.” She was the witch who bequeathed the spell book to the Sanderson Sisters during their childhood.

D’Angelo also expressed her hopes in the interview: “I’m hoping that we are able to explore every aspect of these stories and take these characters on a bunch of fun adventures. ‘Hocus Pocus 3’ is still very much in the early stages, and we don’t really know what it is, but we’re exploring all options.”

“Hocus Pocus 2” was a major success for Disney+, breaking streaming records during the Halloween season, and the buzz surrounding it all but guaranteed the development of a second sequel.

During an interview with THR in October, Adam Shankman, the producer of “Hocus Pocus 2,” hinted at the possibility of follow-up projects, particularly those centered on the sequel’s new characters. “Hocus Pocus 2” introduced fresh faces, such as Whitney Peak as Becca, Belissa Escobedo as Izzy, and Lilia Buckingham as Cassie. This new trio of sisters united to confront the Sandersons, with Becca discovering her own enchanting powers.

Shankman explained, “[Director] Anne [Fletcher] I think handled [Becca’s character arc] really, really beautifully. We went back and forth on how that was going to work, if it was going to work, forever, and Anne was just like, ‘This is what we’re going to do.’ And I think it’s great. And it creates a lot of excitement about potential spinoffs.”

It’s evident that both sequels and spinoffs are under consideration. While Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy reprised their roles as the Sanderson Sisters in “Hocus Pocus 2,” it’s a reasonable assumption that they will return for “Hocus Pocus 3,” at the very least.

As developments continue to unfold, we’ll keep you updated on the latest regarding “Hocus Pocus 3.”
