In 2021, the buzz started when Henry Cavill, famous for his role in “The Witcher,” was in discussions to take the lead in a “Highlander” reboot directed by Chad Stahelski of “John Wick” fame. However, since then, it’s been two quiet years on the project front. The hushed anticipation has finally been broken, as Deadline now reports that Lionsgate is poised to present the project at the American Film Market.

According to Deadline, Lionsgate is unveiling their long-awaited fantasy reboot for the first time at the AFM, and it’s expected to be a high-budget endeavor, exceeding $100 million. Stahelski himself has likened the project to “John Wick” but with swords, promising an action-packed spectacle.

As per Deadline’s report, the team is targeting a 2024 production kickoff. The current screenplay draft for the “Highlander” reboot is credited to Mike Finch.

The original “Highlander” movie, directed by Russell Mulcahy, hit theaters in 1986. It starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman tasked with facing off against his final immortal adversary, a ruthlessly brutal barbarian driven by an insatiable thirst for the legendary Prize.

Although the 1986 film didn’t make a significant splash at the box office, it went on to achieve cult status, giving rise to two movie sequels, an animated series, and a live-action television series. The prospect of a reboot promises to reignite the franchise’s captivating lore for a new generation of fans.
