Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutiérrez, known for works like “Before the Fall” and “Rings,” is returning with his latest creation, “The Wait” (La Espera), a sinister folk horror tragedy set in the mystical and forgotten Andalusian countryside. This eerie location is steeped in ancient traditions, adding an ominous atmosphere to the film.

“The Wait” has been selected as an Official Entry for this year’s Sitges International Film Festival.

Written by Gutiérrez himself, the film is being hailed as a “love letter to the horror/fantasy genre” and is considered his most intimate and brutal work to date. The story delves into the harrowing journey of a man who has endured the tragic loss of his family, descending into a nightmarish abyss.

“The Wait” is a joint production by Spal Films, Nostromo Pictures, and Gutiérrez’s own production company, Unfiled Films. The cast includes talented actors such as Victor Clavijo, Ruth Diaz, Manuel Moron, and Luis Callejo.

The plot revolves around Eladio (played by Victor Clavijo), a keeper on a hunting estate who accepts a bribe from a seasoned hunter. Little does he know that this seemingly promising opportunity will lead to the unraveling of his entire life. As events unfold, Eladio finds himself on a macabre journey into the depths of hell, questioning whether his misfortune is merely coincidental or something far more sinister.

Gutiérrez has been diligently working on this personal indie project while also writing and securing funding for his upcoming remake of the cult horror classic, “Anguish” (1987), originally directed by Bigas Luna.

Known as one of Spain’s premier genre filmmakers, Gutiérrez has been previously associated with highly anticipated projects like the adaptation of James O’Barr’s graphic novel “The Crow” and the remake of Wes Craven’s “The People Under the Stairs.” His dedication to horror and fantasy has earned him a devoted following.

Horror enthusiasts eagerly await “The Wait,” which promises to be an enthralling and unsettling cinematic experience, blending ancient folklore with nightmarish terror. As the Sitges International Film Festival approaches, fans can look forward to the release of the trailer, offering a glimpse into the haunting world that Gutiérrez has meticulously crafted.
