With his impressive track record in the realm of modern slashers through films like “Terrifier” and last year’s “Terrifier 2,” Damien Leone is once again making waves. As “Terrifier 2” prepares to return to theaters on November 1, along with an exclusive sneak peek at “Terrifier 3,” Leone is expressing his eagerness to infuse his signature brand of gory mayhem into another beloved horror franchise from yesteryears.

In a recent interview with Slash Film, Leone shared his aspirations, stating, “I’ve been on record for quite some time now saying if I could ever remake one slasher film, it would be Friday the 13th.” He goes on to emphasize that Jason, the iconic slasher, has been a personal favorite since his childhood, and he envisions a return to the ’80s for this revitalized take on the franchise. Leone’s aim would be to recapture the fear factor that he believes has dwindled as the series progressed, stating, “You just start getting too comfortable with these villains and you need to be scared of them again.”

Leone goes on to reveal that he has engaged in discussions with industry executives overseeing the Friday the 13th franchise. However, he acknowledges that he may still be too much of an under-the-radar talent in Hollywood for them to consider him as a director for such a high-profile project.

Regarding the current status of the Friday the 13th franchise, it’s been mired in legal complications for years. Still, there is a glimmer of hope as Jason Voorhees is slated to make a comeback in a forthcoming television series titled “Crystal Lake,” a collaborative effort between Peacock, A24, and Bryan Fuller of “Hannibal” fame. This “expanded prequel” series is set to feature both Jason and his mother, Mrs. Voorhees, and is expected to make its chilling debut sometime next year.

As for the film aspect of the Friday the 13th franchise, it currently remains dormant. However, the prospect of Damien Leone taking the helm for a Friday the 13th movie is a tantalizing one. Given his track record and the brutal style evident in his films, a Leone-directed entry in the series could potentially deliver some of the most intense carnage the franchise has ever seen, aligning with his previous work on the enigmatic killer Art the Clown.

Fans of Leone can also anticipate his upcoming project, “Terrifier 3,” with a sneak peek available exclusively in theaters on November 1.
