Renowned filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, known for his critically acclaimed movies like “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “Dogtooth,” returns with “Poor Things,” a captivating Frankenstein-inspired narrative based on Alistair Gray’s 1992 novel.
The film features a star-studded cast including Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe. Check out the official trailer up here, accompanied by a striking new poster.
Joining Stone and Dafoe are Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, and Mark Ruffalo. “Poor Things” is slated for an exclusive theatrical release on September 8, 2023.
Lanthimos’ latest creation revolves around the extraordinary journey of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman resurrected by the brilliant and unconventional scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Dafoe). Guided and protected by Baxter, Bella embarks on a quest for knowledge and experiences. Fuelled by her thirst for worldly understanding, Bella sets off on a whirlwind adventure across continents with Duncan Wedderburn (Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer. In an era marred by prejudice, Bella grows resolute in her mission to advocate for equality and liberation.
“Poor Things” has been rated “R” due to its inclusion of strong and pervasive sexual content, graphic nudity, disturbing material, gore, and language.
Stone reunites with Lanthimos following their collaboration in the ruthlessly comedic period film “The Favourite.” This project also brings together the trio of actor, director, and screenwriter Tony McNamara (“The Great,” “Cruella”).
