Helen Mirren takes on the role of legendary crime novelist Patricia Highsmith, author of The Talented Mr. Ripley, in the upcoming psychological thriller A Talent for Murder. The official trailer has arrived, offering a glimpse at a tense and sinister confrontation between the writer and an ambitious young literary agent.

Bleecker Street will release A Talent for Murder in theaters on October 23, 2026.

The film follows a young literary agent from New York who travels to Switzerland with an unusual mission: convince Highsmith to write one final installment of her celebrated Ripley series.

What begins as a professional assignment soon turns into a far more complicated encounter as the agent finds himself face-to-face with one of literature’s most fascinating and enigmatic figures.

Alongside Mirren, the cast includes Alden Ehrenreich (Weapons) and Olivia Cooke (House of the Dragon).

Anton Corbijn (The American) directs the film from a screenplay by Joanna Murray-Smith.

Bleecker Street CEO Kent Sanderson previously praised the film as a captivating tribute to both Highsmith and her work.

“We are thrilled to be reuniting once again with LD, as well as the great Helen Mirren, to release Corbijn’s captivating ode to not only Highsmith’s lively spirit, but her riveting work itself,” Sanderson said.

A Talent for Murder will also screen at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.

TIFF describes the film as a “smouldering chamber thriller” centered on the strange confrontation between a literary agent and Highsmith, whose coldly intelligent crime novels inspired classics including Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

With Mirren stepping into the role of the notoriously complex author, A Talent for Murder promises a dark, claustrophobic thriller where the line between fiction and reality may become dangerously blurred.
