‘Happy Death Day 3’ Not Dead Yet, Says Jessica Rothe
After years of rumors and false starts, Happy Death Day 3 finally showed signs of life last year when Christopher Landon and Jessica Rothe confirmed the sequel was moving forward.
But one year later, the clock is still ticking—and the project hasn’t entered production.
That hasn’t shaken Rothe’s commitment to returning as Tree.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Rothe revealed that Landon already has the third film mapped out. “He has the whole story figured out,” she said, suggesting the delay isn’t creative—it’s logistical.
In other words, the pieces are there. They just haven’t snapped into place yet.
Rothe made it clear she’s not going anywhere, even if it takes decades to close the loop. Whether it happens next year or far down the road, she’s ready to return and finish Tree’s story—no matter how long it takes.
Back in 2020, Landon teased the working title Happy Death Day to Us, hinting at a sequel that would take the franchise in a new and unexpected direction compared to the first two films.
For now, both Rothe and Landon remain busy in the genre space. Rothe is coming off the SXSW debut of her sci-fi mystery Imposters, with more horror on the way—including Affection and the survival slasher River. Meanwhile, Landon continues building his horror slate, recently boarding the supernatural project Final Boarding and developing the Netflix thriller Blink of an Eye.
As for Happy Death Day 3—it’s not dead.
It’s just waiting for the next reset.
