‘28 Years Later’ Trilogy Advances as Cillian Murphy Enters Talks

With 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple set to hit theaters next month, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down. According to Deadline, Sony has officially greenlit Part 3 of the new trilogy — and the infection is spreading faster than ever.

The third film doesn’t have an official title yet, but Alex Garland (28 Days Later, 28 Years Later) is back to write the script, continuing the apocalyptic vision he launched over two decades ago.

Cillian Murphy, who returns as Jim in The Bone Temple, is now in talks to reprise the role once more for the trilogy’s final chapter. Fans last saw Jim at a secluded countryside cottage in the finale of 28 Days Later, barely clinging to hope amid the outbreak. His return in The Bone Temple has reignited excitement for a full-circle conclusion.

The first two films in the trilogy were shot back-to-back, with Danny Boyle directing the opener and Nia DaCosta (Candyman, Hedda) stepping behind the camera for the second installment. Boyle has openly expressed interest in returning to direct the trilogy’s capstone, though no director has been confirmed yet.

In The Bone Temple, the story pushes deeper into moral decay and human horror. Dr. Kelson’s twisted new relationship threatens to reshape what’s left of the world, while Spike’s brush with Jimmy Crystal spirals into a nightmare he can’t outrun. The infected aren’t the only monsters anymore — survivors themselves have become the deadliest threat.

Written by Garland, the next chapter of the post-apocalyptic saga storms into theaters January 16, 2026 via Sony.
