Jon Watts Teases ‘Clown’ Sequel: ‘I Want It to Be Like Evil Dead 2
Before swinging through skyscrapers as Marvel’s Spider-Man director, Jon Watts got his start in horror with the 2014 feature Clown — a twisted tale of a father trapped in a cursed clown suit with deadly consequences. Now, with Germany’s Turbine Medien releasing the film on 4K Ultra HD, Watts is revealing plans to take the nightmare even further.
“I still see a lot of potential in the premise,” Watts told Variety. “When I watch it now, I’m like, ‘Oh, we could have done so much more there.’ I’d love for it to be like Evil Dead 2. I’d love to tell the same story, but jump off to even crazier places.”
Watts and co-writer Christopher Ford have a sequel already mapped out — and they’re dreaming big.
“We’d want to do seven of them, make it a real long-term franchise like Leprechaun or something like that. There are a lot of facets to the story that we’re still interested in telling, because it’s great. It’s kind of an evergreen premise where anyone can put on the suit.”
Clown begins with a simple, darkly comic premise: a father dons an old clown suit to save his son’s birthday party, only to discover it’s cursed, and there’s no way to remove it. From there, chaos and horror unfold in a grotesque mix of body horror and psychological terror.
The project originally started as a mock trailer, which caught the eye of Eli Roth. Roth came on as producer, securing financing and helping transform the short concept into a full feature. Despite a rocky theatrical release via Dimension Films, Clown has since grown into a cult horror favorite.
Watts hasn’t abandoned his horror roots — he recently returned as a producer for Final Destination: Bloodlines, which he also conceived, proving that even a blockbuster director can’t resist the lure of gruesome, high-stakes scares.
With a potential seven-film roadmap, the Clown franchise could be the next cult horror juggernaut, blending humor, terror, and a cursed suit that refuses to come off.
