Robert Englund Calls for New Horror from ‘Freddy vs. Jason’ Director Ronny Yu

Hong Kong filmmaker Ronny Yu made waves early in his career with films like The Postman Strikes Back, Bless This House, The Bride With White Hair, and Warriors of Virtue. But it was his bold turn into horror with Bride of Chucky that cemented his legacy in the genre. Released on Halloween 1998, Yu’s horror-comedy — written by Don Mancini — revitalized the Chucky franchise seven years after Child’s Play 3, blending self-referential humor reminiscent of Wes Craven’s Scream with shocking, inventive scares.

Yu’s work on The Bride With White Hair earned him the Bride of Chucky gig, which in turn led to him helming Freddy vs. Jason in 2003. The mashup of the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises proved a box office hit, grossing $116 million worldwide and showcasing Yu as a master of blending horror with larger-than-life action.

Despite this success, Yu stepped away from horror after Freddy vs. Jason. Since 2003, he’s directed only two films: Fearless (2006) and Saving General Yang (2013), along with a single episode of the anthology series Fear Itself in 2008, titled “Family Man.”

Now, horror fans — and none more vocal than Freddy vs. Jason star Robert Englund — are eager for Yu’s return. In a recent interview with Dread Central, Englund expressed his desire to see Yu back in the director’s chair.

“I’d really love to see something new from Ronnie Yu,” Englund said. “Not only did he make Freddy vs. Jason work, but I remember being at a film festival in France years ago, sitting with John Landis at nine in the morning, sipping those big bowl cups of French coffee, watching Bride of Chucky.”

Englund added, “Ronnie has such a gift for that edgy, graphic-novel-style horror.”

Fans are now left wondering: will Ronny Yu make a triumphant return to horror, and what terrifying, stylish masterpiece might he deliver next?
