Somnium, the feature debut of writer-director Racheal Cain, tells the unsettling story of Gemma (Chloë Levine), a young woman from a small town who moves to Los Angeles after a painful breakup. Struggling to make ends meet, she takes an overnight job at Somnium, a shadowy experimental sleep clinic that claims to “make your dreams come true.” Instead, she becomes ensnared in disturbing secrets and strange phenomena that begin to shatter her sense of reality.
Reviews from genre critics describe Somnium as a haunting, layered character study that explores ambition, desperation, and exploitation in the Hollywood dream factory. The visuals and tone take inspiration from filmmakers like Lynch and Cronenberg, blending noir suspense with eerie dream logic. Chloë Levine delivers a grounded, emotionally resonant performance as Gemma, charting her journey from hopeful newcomer to emotionally fragile under pressure. Supporting performances include Will Peltz as Noah, the clinic’s dream designer, Johnathon Schaech as a manipulative producer named Brooks, and Peter Vack portraying Gemma’s emotionally unresolved ex, Hunter.
The film premiered at the Chattanooga Film Festival in June 2024 and debuted at Panic Fest in early 2025, earning praise for its craftsmanship despite a modest budget. Critics highlight its suspenseful score and understated production design, which effectively evoke a dreamlike, tense atmosphere. Somnium is set to be released theatrically in Los Angeles on August 29, 2025, in New York City on September 6, and will be available on VOD via Yellow Veil Pictures starting September 9.
With somber visuals, creeping dread, and a focus on the psychological cost of chasing a dream, Somnium stands out as a polished and thought-provoking indie sci-fi horror. It confronts the temptation of easy transformation and the thin line between ambition and self-destruction.
