‘Backrooms’ Movie Teaser from A24 Promises Liminal Horror in May 2026
Dark Star Pictures has released the official trailer for The A-Frame, an ooze-soaked sci-fi horror film that ventures into terrifying new dimensions—and isn’t afraid to get messy doing it.
Set to hit theaters on July 25, with a digital release following on August 5, The A-Frame promises a twisted blend of science fiction, body horror, and practical effects-heavy grotesquery.
The film follows a quantum physicist who invents a machine capable of opening a tunnel to a sub-atomic parallel universe. In his efforts to validate the invention, he stumbles upon an unexpected side effect: an unorthodox treatment for cancer. After successfully transporting lab rats between dimensions, he begins recruiting human test subjects to prove the machine’s potential—only to invite nightmarish consequences from beyond.
Written and directed by Calvin Lee Reeder, The A-Frame continues the grand sci-fi horror tradition of brilliant minds unleashing unspeakable horrors through reckless ambition. Reeder leans into this tradition with dark humor, body-melting visuals, and an unapologetic love for all things goopy.
The film stars Johnny Whitworth (Empire Records, Limitless), Nik Dodani (The Parenting), and Dana Namerode (What Josiah Saw).
Following its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, The A-Frame garnered praise for its blend of character-driven storytelling and outrageous practical effects. One review noted:
“Reeder focuses on character work first and foremost to ensure its final punchline lands—and it does. But when the horror hits, the practical effects more than make up for the wait. The A-Frame delivers the slime, the shocks, and a killer ending that’ll leave you either laughing—or gagging.”
Reeder himself emphasized the importance of tactile, in-camera effects. “We never saw this film without some practical elements,” he told Bloody Disgusting. “We really rely on both practical and digital effects working in unison, but practical is what grounds it. As long as we can keep making movies before AI takes over everything, we’re going to keep putting real effects in front of the audience. They deserve it.”
While the trailer plays coy with its gore, the film’s poster and early buzz hint at a fun, disturbing ride in the vein of The Fly or From Beyond—complete with all the viscera, slime, and body horror fans could ask for.
