#5: Krampus

Holiday cult classic Krampus amps up the Christmas spirit with European folklore and an ancient horned beast that punishes naughty children.  What’s not to love? The films synopsis reads as, “While the holiday season represents the most magical time of year, ancient European folklore warns of Krampus, a horned beast who punishes naughty children at Christmastime. When dysfunctional family squabbling causes young Max (Emjay Anthony) to lose his festive spirit, it unleashes the wrath of the fearsome demon. As Krampus lays siege to the Engel home, mom (Toni Collette), pop (Adam Scott), sister (Stefania LaVie Owen) and brother must band together to save one another from a monstrous fate.”

#4: Misery

An obsessive fan played by the iconic Kathy Bates, a Stephen King novel, and a wintry tale of abduction all have what in common? A great film that is known as Misery. This masterpiece’s synopsis reads as, “After a serious car crash, novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is rescued by former nurse Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), who claims to be his biggest fan. Annie brings him to her remote cabin to recover, where her obsession takes a dark turn when she discovers Sheldon is killing off her favorite character from his novels. As Sheldon devises plans for escape, Annie grows increasingly controlling, even violent, as she forces the author to shape his writing to suit her twisted fantasies.”

#3: Jack Frost

A perfect recipe for winter cocktails is a serial killer named Jack Frost that is transformed into a mutant snowman. This film’s synopsis reads as, “As notorious serial killer Jack Frost is being driven to his execution, the truck carrying the murderer encounters a bizarre accident that transforms him into a mutant snowman. Sheriff Sam Tiler, who caught the psychopath originally, has remained concerned about his return, and it seems that his fears were well-founded. Before long, bodies pile up, all killed in gruesome wintry ways.”

#2: Frozen

Not to be confused of the Disney film of the same name, Frozen follows a trio of snowboarders that must beat the mean mistress known as hypothermia when stranded on a mountaintop. The synopsis reads as, “Stranded on Mount Holliston as night falls, a trio of snowboarders must find a way to escape the mountain before the deadly cold sets in.”

#1: The Shining

A terrifying film set in the dead of winter in.a Colorado hotel based on a Stephen King novel with strange occurrences happening throughout the hotel makes for a horror film any horror fan would love to watch any time of the year.  The film’s synopsis reads as, “Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) becomes winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, hoping to cure his writer’s block.
