Scarlett Johansson Says ‘Tower of Terror’ Movie Is “Taking Shape”
After reviving Haunted Mansion in 2023, Disney is setting its sights on another iconic theme park attraction: Tower of Terror. Originally announced in 2021 with Scarlett Johansson attached to star and produce, the film adaptation has quietly been in development—until now.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johansson offered a long-awaited update, admitting that the project has been trickier than expected.
“It’s a hard nut to crack,” she said. “Harder than you think, because the ride itself… there’s some lore to it, but it’s—well, I don’t want to say thin, but it kind of is!”
Still, she remains optimistic.
“That’s part of the mystery of the ride. It’s been a fun project to work on, because it’s a blue sky project. But we’ll crack the case. It’s taking shape!”
The latest update still credits Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley as the screenwriter.
Known formally as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, the ride debuted at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 1994 and has since become a fan-favorite fixture across multiple parks worldwide. The eerie elevator-based attraction drops guests into a paranormal narrative where hotel guests once vanished under mysterious, supernatural circumstances.
This isn’t the first time the ride has inspired a screen adaptation. A 1997 made-for-TV film starred Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, marking Disney’s very first attempt at translating its theme park rides into movies—paving the way for hits like Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion.
With Johansson’s involvement and a renewed push behind the scenes, Disney’s Tower of Terror may soon rise again.
