Brutal and Uncensored: ‘28 Years Later’ Slapped with R Rating

The rage virus is set to erupt once more—Danny Boyle’s highly anticipated sequel, 28 Years Later, hits theaters in just two weeks on June 20, and the official MPA rating has finally dropped.
Unsurprisingly, the film has earned a hard “R” rating for “strong bloody violence, grisly images, graphic nudity, language, and brief sexuality.” Fans of the original films should prepare for another uncompromising descent into post-apocalyptic horror.
Directed by Boyle and written by longtime collaborator Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Ex Machina, Annihilation), 28 Years Later picks up nearly three decades after the outbreak of the rage virus. Still trapped within a brutal military quarantine, humanity clings to survival. One group lives on a fortified island connected to the mainland by a single causeway—but when a member ventures back into infected territory, they uncover disturbing new truths about what the virus has become… and what people have become in its wake.
Alfie Williams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes lead the cast.
The film serves as the first chapter in a new trilogy. The second installment, titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, arrives January 16, 2026, with Nia DaCosta (Candyman) at the helm.
The infection is spreading again. Are you ready?
