For fans of Robert Eggers’ eerie masterpiece, “The Lighthouse,” and those who found delight in Hidden Fields’ “Mundaun,” there’s a new must-see title on the horizon – Morteshka’s “One-Eyed Likho.” Drawing inspiration from a dark Slavic fairy tale and immersing players in the chilling setting of 19th-century Russia, this first-person horror adventure seamlessly echoes the stylings of Eggers’ folk horror cinematic masterpiece.
The game’s source of inspiration is the Slavic fairy tale “The One-eyed Likho,” a tale that personifies evil fate and misfortune within Slavic mythology. Depicted as an old, emaciated woman in black with a single eye, the Likho is a creature of ominous significance. In “One-Eyed Likho,” players will embark on a quest to locate the Likho within a haunting realm, heavily drawing on the atmosphere of 19th-century Russia while endeavoring to escape their own ominous destiny. Notably, the game deliberately adopts a greyscale presentation, evoking an immersive 4:3 aspect ratio that deepens the adventure, much like the cinematic approach in “The Lighthouse.”
Beyond its storytelling aspects, the game introduces a unique burning mechanic, challenging players to tackle fire-based puzzles and utilize matches to illuminate their path.
Scheduled for a 2024 release on Steam, “One-Eyed Likho” is making a special appearance during Steam’s Scream Fest from October 26 to November 2, offering a tantalizing demo for those eager to experience its eerie world firsthand.
