Freestyle Digital Media Secures North American Theatrical Rights for Mongolian Horror Film ‘Aberrance‘
Freestyle Digital Media has made an exciting acquisition by obtaining the North American theatrical rights for the Mongolian horror film ‘Aberrance.’ The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States on October 6, 2023, marking a significant moment as the first Mongolian horror feature to grace U.S. theaters, introducing American audiences to Mongolian cinema.
After its theatrical release, ‘Aberrance’ will become available on video on demand (VOD) and digital platforms in 2024.
The film received its North American premiere at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, where it garnered positive reviews as an Official Selection in the Midnighters section.
‘Aberrance’ delves into the eerie story of Erkhmee and Selenge, city dwellers who venture into an old cabin nestled deep within the Mongolian wilderness. A sense of unease settles over the couple as Erkhmee’s ostensibly noble intentions to provide a safe haven for his artistic wife clash with the disturbing actions and behaviors witnessed by their inquisitive neighbor. As the neighbor delves deeper into unraveling the mystery behind this aberrant behavior, more questions and trouble begin to surface.
The film marks the directorial debut of Baatar Batsukh, who co-wrote the script alongside Erdene Orosoo (known for ‘Kinsman of the Sun’) and Byambasuren Ganbat.
‘Aberrance’ features a talented ensemble Mongolian cast, including Selenge Chadraabal, Erkhembayar Ganbat, Yalalt Namsrai, Oyundary Jamsranjav, Badamtsetseg Batmunkh, Bayarsanaa Batchuluun, and Ariunbyamba Sukhee. Enkhmandakh Nemekhbaatar produced the film, with executive production by Angarag Sukhbaatar, Trevor Morgan Doyle, and Alexa Khan of Three Flames Pictures and Team Hero Production.
Alexa Khan of Three Flames Pictures expressed her pride as a Mongolian and American filmmaker for the film’s theatrical distribution in the U.S., highlighting its significance as a milestone for the AAPI filmmaking community.
Trevor Morgan Doyle of Three Flames Pictures, a Gulf War veteran and film producer, emphasized the gratification of achieving the ambitious goal of securing theatrical distribution for a Mongolian film. He also outlined their long-term plan to elevate Mongolian cinema and artists to the recognition they deserve in the industry.
The acquisition of ‘Aberrance’ by Freestyle Digital Media was negotiated through Raven Banner on behalf of filmmakers Trevor Doyle and Alexa Khan of Three Flames Pictures.
