‘The Dybbuk’ Reveals a Dark Jewish Exorcism Tale Starring Steve Guttenberg
Steve Guttenberg is stepping into supernatural horror with The Dybbuk, an upcoming possession thriller inspired by Jewish folklore.
The film will also star Beth Grant (No Country for Old Men) and Craig Bierko (Cinderella Man), with production recently wrapping in Los Angeles.
Based on the iconic play by S. Ansky, the contemporary adaptation comes from writer-director Lee Amir-Cohen and writer-producer Ashley Bua.
Guttenberg stars as Rabbi Azrael, a spiritual leader and mystic who finds himself facing a terrifying supernatural threat when he is forced to perform a dangerous exorcism. The ritual comes after the spirit of a dead man possesses a young woman from his congregation.
Bierko will portray Sender, the possessed woman’s father, while Grant plays Frayda, her grandmother.
The Dybbuk marks Amir-Cohen’s feature directorial debut and explores one of the most famous supernatural concepts in Jewish folklore — the dybbuk, a restless spirit believed to possess the living.
With a cast led by Guttenberg and a story rooted in centuries-old mythology, The Dybbuk aims to bring a chilling new take on the classic possession tale to horror audiences.
