Hollywood is looking to capture the next internet-born horror sensation, and this time it’s diving into the terrifying world of analog horror.

Following the recent announcement of a Siren Head feature adaptation, a movie based on the viral YouTube horror series The Mandela Catalogue is officially in development — with some major names attached.

Amblin Entertainment’s Steven Spielberg, United Artists’ Scott Stuber (Frankenstein), and Amazon MGM Studios are set to produce the feature after winning a competitive bidding war involving 11 studios.

Created by Alex Kister in 2021, The Mandela Catalogue is set in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, where humanity is threatened by mysterious shape-shifting entities known as Alternates.

These nearly immortal creatures imitate humans and manipulate technology — including televisions, computers, GPS systems, and other forms of media — as part of a disturbing campaign of psychological warfare. The series’ mythology centers around false versions of religious figures and a terrifying battle for humanity’s survival.

Kister will make his feature directorial debut with the film adaptation, working from a screenplay he co-wrote with Tyler Clifton.

Since launching on YouTube, The Mandela Catalogue has become one of the biggest original analog horror franchises on the platform, earning more than 100 million views across its official episodes and building a massive fan following.

The film will be produced by Spielberg and Holly Bario for Amblin Entertainment, alongside Aaron B. Koontz for Paper Street Pictures, and Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists. Kister and Clifton will also serve as producers.

Annie McCreery will oversee the project for United Artists, while Maria Fortese will oversee for Amblin Entertainment.

With Hollywood increasingly looking toward online horror communities for the next major franchise, The Mandela Catalogue could become the latest viral nightmare to make the jump from screens to the big screen.

Stay tuned as more details emerge on this terrifying adaptation.
