‘Halloween: The Game’ Slashes Past 500,000 Players, Biggest Asymmetrical Horror Launch on Steam
The Boogeyman is off to a strong start.
IllFonic and Gun Interactive’s Halloween: The Game has already attracted more than 500,000 players across PC and consoles just hours after its launch.
The milestone was announced on the game’s official Steam page, marking an impressive opening for the new asymmetrical multiplayer horror game.
On Steam specifically, Halloween: The Game reached a 24-hour peak of more than 33,000 concurrent players, according to SteamDB. While the game is still in its first days, that number has already placed it among Steam’s more-played releases this week.
More importantly for horror fans, Halloween: The Game appears to have delivered the biggest Steam launch ever for an asymmetrical multiplayer horror game.
At launch, the game surpassed the debut numbers of several major titles in the genre. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre peaked at around 17,000 players, while Friday the 13th: The Game reached roughly 16,000 and Dead by Daylight launched with approximately 18,000 concurrent players.
Halloween: The Game, meanwhile, topped 22,000 concurrent players during its launch, putting it ahead of all three.
That makes the early performance particularly notable for a franchise-based horror game entering an already crowded asymmetrical multiplayer market.
Of course, the 500,000-player milestone isn’t directly comparable to a game’s sales numbers. Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword, for example, sold one million copies on its launch day. But the two games target very different audiences and operate under completely different business models.
For Halloween: The Game, the bigger question now is whether IllFonic can keep players coming back.
The game’s first major test will come over the next several weeks as the initial launch excitement begins to fade. A physical release is also scheduled for October 6 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, potentially giving the game another boost.
For now, though, Michael Myers is having a pretty successful opening weekend.
As the developers put it, this launch is only “the beginning of the Boogeyman’s journey.”
Halloween: The Game is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
