The renowned Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, which served as the inspiration for Stephen King’s iconic horror novel “The Shining,” is set to become a unique horror destination in collaboration with Blumhouse. The esteemed horror production company will exclusively curate a 10,000+ square-foot exhibit space within the Stanley Film Center, offering an immersive horror experience. Here’s everything we know about this thrilling venture.

Governor Jared Polis, alongside the Colorado Office of Film, Television and Media, a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), announced the partnership, expressing enthusiasm about Blumhouse’s involvement in creating a true horror destination within the iconic hotel.

Blumhouse, known for its success in producing horror films, scripted/unscripted television series, and games, boasts an extensive catalog featuring franchises like Halloween, The Black Phone, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Get Out, M3GAN, Paranormal Activity, and The Purge. At the Stanley Film Center, Blumhouse will curate exhibits showcasing popular franchises and box office hits from its portfolio, spanning films, television, and gaming.

Governor Polis remarked, “The Stanley Hotel is hallowed ground for horror fans, and that makes this presence at the Stanley Film Center a natural extension for Blumhouse.” He expressed anticipation for the exhibit to contribute to tourism and economic growth.

Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum shared his excitement, stating, “Fans are going to get closer than ever before to their favorite films.” He emphasized the unique opportunity to bring Blumhouse’s creative vision to the iconic location and play a part in creating a horror destination.

John Cullen, President of Grand Heritage Hotel Group, which owns the Stanley Hotel, expressed the excitement and anticipation for the collaboration. He acknowledged the significance of choosing Blumhouse as the partner for bringing the Stanley Film Center exhibit space to life.

The Stanley Film Center, approved as a Regional Tourism Act project in 2015, received a $46 million contribution from the state of Colorado to support its construction. The EDC (Economic Development Commission) approved a technical update to facilitate bonds for the final construction, reinforcing the commitment to making the Stanley Film Center a major attraction.

Jeff Kraft, Deputy Director of OEDIT, highlighted the unique potential of the partnership to attract out-of-state visitors to Colorado, establishing the state as a premier destination for horror enthusiasts. Colorado Film Commissioner Donald Zuckerman expressed support for the project, anticipating that it will draw visitors from across the country and beyond.

The main Stanley Film Center building, estimated to be at least 67,000 square feet, is projected to cost over $70 million for completion and furnishing, marking a significant investment in creating a world-class horror destination.
