Argentinian filmmaker Pedro Cristiani’s inaugural feature, titled “Deus Irae,” is making waves with a blood-soaked first look image unveiled by Deadline.

XYZ Films has recently secured North American sales rights to “Deus Irae,” while Reel Suspects has obtained world sales rights, according to the latest report from Deadline.

The narrative of “Deus Irae” revolves around Father Javier, a priest leading a fragmented existence. On one side, he aids families claiming to have witnessed miracles, while on the other, he is part of a trio of excommunicated priests who pursue the possessed to perform exorcisms on their own terms—using Bibles, fire, and shotguns.

As the protagonist grapples with the realization that defeating Evil may require embracing something even darker, he is forced to question the extent to which he is willing to sacrifice his own humanity or sanity in order to conquer the Devil.

The film is an expansion of the same-titled short film, with Cristiani sharing, “The goal of Deus Irae was to develop a completely independent film that pushed the visual and storytelling boundaries like no genre feature dared to do. But in the six years that took to bring it to completion, it became so much more: a volatile, highly stylized, fearless film.”

XYZ Films’ Todd Brown expressed excitement about working with Cristiani, stating, “We first discovered the immensely talented Pedro Cristiani when the short film version of Deus Irae was traveling the global festival circuit and it has been an absolute thrill to work with him on bringing his vision for the full feature to the world. Pedro is an immense talent and Deus Irae is a totally unique work.”
