‘The Bride!’ New Images Tease Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Punk Rock Take on Bride of Frankenstein
Christian Bale is Frankenstein’s Monster and Jessie Buckley is the Bride in director Maggie Gyllenhaal’s bold reimagining, The Bride!. Entertainment Weekly has unveiled a batch of striking new images, along with fresh insight from Gyllenhaal on her monster movie vision.
The Bride! is set to hit theaters on March 6, 2026, and according to Gyllenhaal, the film was born from a realization that James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein barely focuses on the Bride at all.
“She’s in it for maybe three minutes, and not until the very end,” Gyllenhaal told EW. “It’s a Frankenstein movie. People kept saying, ‘Oh, you’re making Frankenstein,’ and I’d say, ‘No, I’m making the Bride of Frankenstein.’ But really, it’s just the Bride.”
Gyllenhaal says the film explores who the Bride was before she’s brought back to life, framing the character with an almost mythological weight.
“She’s almost every woman,” Gyllenhaal explains. “Before she’s revived, you watch her deal with a lot of shit. She puts up with it — but when she comes back, she has a powerful need to express herself.”
Set against a pulpy, reimagined 1930s Chicago, the film follows a lonely Frankenstein’s Monster (Bale) who seeks out brilliant scientist Dr. Euphronious (five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening) to create him a companion. The experiment revives a murdered young woman, and The Bride (Buckley) is born — unleashing chaos neither creator nor creation could have anticipated.
According to the official synopsis, what follows includes murder, possession, a radical cultural movement, and outlaw lovers locked in a volatile, combustible romance.
The cast also includes Peter Sarsgaard, Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, and Oscar winner Penélope Cruz. Gyllenhaal directs from her own screenplay.
