Tommy Wirkola’s Shark Thriller Swims to Netflix, Skips Theatrical Release
After navigating some choppy waters, writer-director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow, Violent Night) is finally steering his long-gestating shark thriller to safer shores — with Netflix now set as its home.
Originally announced under the title Beneath the Storm, the film was first slated for a theatrical release from Sony on August 1 before being moved up to July 3 and retitled Shiver. Since then, the project has quietly lost its name altogether, likely to avoid confusion with Tim Miller’s similarly titled time-loop shark thriller.
Now officially pulled from Sony’s theatrical release calendar, Wirkola’s untitled creature feature will instead debut on Netflix. The move comes via Sony’s first-look deal with the streaming giant for select direct-to-streaming titles.
Plot details remain tightly sealed, but the cast includes Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2), and Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place: Part II).
Wirkola produces alongside Adam McKay and Kevin Messick of HyperObject Industries, continuing a partnership that previously found success with Netflix’s Don’t Look Up.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be back in business with all our friends at Netflix on this film,” McKay said in a statement. “We had a great experience together on Don’t Look Up and look forward to working with them to make this an event streaming release in 2026.”
Wirkola remains busy elsewhere, with Violent Night 2 set to hit theaters on December 4, and the adult animated comedy Spermageddon also on the horizon.
