New images from Empire give a first look at Charlize Theron as tough climber Sasha and Taron Egerton as sadistic hunter Ben in the survival thriller Apex.

Directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest, 2 Guns), the film streams on Netflix beginning April 24.

Kormákur tells Empire, “The environment, the geography where you make the film, it starts to inform the story and vice versa. Space and weather and landscape are a character in films. It’s very important to me to use it. I try to drag the cast through hell — because they have to experience it!”

Theron adds, “[Kormákur] was always the first one to fucking do the craziest thing that he was asking us to do. He knew what I was capable of. You want someone that can push you to a level that you can’t take yourself.”

Apex follows a grieving adrenaline junkie who sets out to conquer a deadly Australian river, only to find herself trapped in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with a ruthless predator.

The cast also includes Eric Bana, with a script by Jeremy Robbins (The Purge).

Theron produces alongside Beth Kono and AJ Dix via their Secret Menu banner, with additional production by Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready for Chernin Entertainment, Ian Bryce for Ian Bryce Productions, and Kormákur for RVK Studios. Executive producers include Ray Angelic, Will McCance, and Dawn Olmstead.

Rated R for “some strong violence, grisly images, nudity, and language,” Apex promises a brutal and thrilling survival experience.
