Andy & Barbara Muschietti Leave the Door Open for a Mama 2
It’s been a decade since Andy and Barbara Muschietti first crept onto the horror scene with Guillermo del Toro-produced Mama, a chilling tale that cemented the siblings’ reputation and eventually led them to revive Stephen King’s IT with two blockbuster films and a prequel TV series, IT: Welcome to Derry, wrapping its first season this Sunday on HBO Max.
But despite the original Mama sequel being announced the same year the movie hit theaters, a full-blown franchise never materialized. In 2016, Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kölsch (Starry Eyes, Pet Sematary) were tapped to rewrite and direct Mama 2, yet the project stalled and never moved forward. So, is a return of the ghostly mother figure still possible?
The Muschietti siblings addressed the question during a Reddit AMA promoting the Season One finale of IT: Welcome to Derry on December 14. When asked about the future of Mama, Barbara Muschietti teased:
“No one in the Muschietti universe ever really dies. We hold Mama very close to our hearts, so who knows?”
Fans of the 2013 horror hit starring Jessica Chastain might want to keep the lights on. In the original, two little girls disappear into the woods the day their parents are murdered. When they’re found alive in a decrepit cabin, their uncle and his girlfriend try to give them a normal life — but horrifying events soon unfold, suggesting the traumatized sisters may not be the only guests haunting their new home.
Could Mama 2 finally rise from the shadows? Only time will tell.
