Guillermo del Toro Wants to Bring His Own Vision of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ to Life

Guillermo del Toro, the visionary filmmaker behind Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, and this year’s Frankenstein, has revealed that he’s interested in tackling another classic monster — The Phantom of the Opera.

In a new interview with Inverse, del Toro admitted the idea has been haunting him for a while. “It’s such a classic tale, but I would do it differently,” he said when asked which iconic monster story he’d most like to reimagine next. “I have a couple of ideas, but for now, I’m going into crime and stop-motion.”

Del Toro’s fascination with timeless monsters is nothing new. He was once in talks with Universal to help reimagine their Universal Monsters lineup — a plan that never materialized. Instead, he gave horror fans his own spiritual version of Creature from the Black Lagoon with The Shape of Water, which went on to win multiple Oscars.

Now, following the success of Frankenstein, del Toro is exploring new creative territory, including a stop-motion project for Netflix. He hinted that he’s entering a new artistic chapter, saying, “I feel like I need a change.”

Whether or not The Phantom of the Opera becomes part of that next chapter, one thing’s certain — if del Toro ever brings his vision of the Phantom to life, it’ll be dripping in gothic beauty, tragedy, and the kind of dark romanticism only he can conjure.
