‘Bugonia’ with Emma Stone & Jesse Plemons Set for Halloween Release

Focus Features has rescheduled the release of Bugonia, the latest film from Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos. Originally set for November 7, the dark sci-fi comedy will now debut with a limited theatrical run beginning October 24, followed by a wide release on Halloween, October 31, 2025.

Shot in VistaVision, Bugonia will open early in select New York and Los Angeles theaters for a special weeklong engagement.

The film stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. It follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap a powerful CEO, believing she’s an alien planning Earth’s destruction. Though it sounds like a thriller, Bugonia is actually a black comedy and sci-fi mashup—an English-language remake of Jang Joon-Hwan’s cult Korean film Save the Green Planet! (2003).

The story’s blend of absurdity, horror, and satire aligns closely with Lanthimos’ signature style. The screenplay is penned by Will Tracy (The Menu), with Ari Aster (Hereditary), Ed Guiney, Miky Lee, and Lanthimos among the film’s producers.

In a previous statement, producers Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen praised the original film’s genre-bending brilliance, calling it “one of the most remarkable films to come out of South Korea” and highlighting its relevance in today’s chaotic world.
