‘Backrooms’ Movie Teaser from A24 Promises Liminal Horror in May 2026
The first teaser for Ben Wheatley’s upcoming neo-Western thriller, “Normal,” drops audiences into a seemingly sleepy Minnesota town—quiet, predictable, and utterly unremarkable… until everything goes sideways.
The film hits theaters nationwide on April 17, 2026, via Magnolia Pictures. Wheatley, known for Meg 2: The Trench and Kill List, directs from a script by Derek Kolstad, the mastermind behind John Wick and Nobody, promising a taut mix of suspense, violence, and moral complexity.
Bob Odenkirk stars as Sheriff Ulysses, assigned to the quaint town of Normal to escape both personal turmoil and past professional missteps. But when a bank robbery shatters the town’s calm, Ulysses uncovers dark secrets lurking beneath the surface, proving that Normal is anything but its name suggests.
Joining Odenkirk are Henry Winkler (Scream) and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), rounding out a cast capable of delivering both gravitas and menace.
Odenkirk and Kolstad also serve as producers alongside Marc Provissiero (Nobody) and QWGmire (The Life of Chuck), with a robust slate of executive producers including Molly C. Quinn, Matthew M. Welty, Elan Gale, Josh Adler, Rhonda Baker, Carrie Wilkins, Glenn Feig, Matthew J. Anderson, Jared D. Underwood, Andrew C. Robinson, and Ellen Rutter.
“Normal” made its first impression on audiences during the Midnight Madness program at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, and the teaser hints at a story that’s as darkly twisted as it is thrilling.
For fans of neo-Westerns, tense thrillers, and morally complex characters, Normal is shaping up to be a must-see.
