‘Stranger Things’ Finale to Run 2 Hours, Streaming Only, No Theatrical Release

The final season of Stranger Things is almost here. The eight-episode fifth season drops its first four episodes on November 26, followed by three more on December 25, with the series finale arriving on Netflix on December 31.

In a recent Variety interview, creators Matt and Ross Duffer confirmed that the final episode will essentially be a feature-length movie, clocking in at around two hours. While long, it’s still shorter than the Season 4 finale, which ran 2 hours and 22 minutes.

Episode runtimes for the first four episodes of Season 5 are:

  • Episode 1: 1h 8m
  • Episode 2: 54m
  • Episode 3: 1h 6m
  • Episode 4: 1h 23m

Runtimes for the remaining episodes have not been officially released.

The Duffer brothers tease that the final season will deliver everything fans expect: Demogorgons, Mind Flayer, Vecna, the Upside Down, and Hawkins, wrapping up the story completely. Season 5 also features an 18-month time jump from Season 4, which ended with the Upside Down spilling into Hawkins.

Despite the cinematic scope, the finale won’t be released in theaters. Netflix executive Bela Bajaria says:

“A lot of people have watched Stranger Things on Netflix… releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want.”

Interestingly, the Duffer brothers are moving to Paramount next year to focus on projects that can hit the big screen — a move reflecting Netflix’s streaming-first approach and the filmmakers’ desire for theatrical storytelling.
