Ryan Hurst Cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s ‘God of War’ Series
Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead) has officially been cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War, bringing the iconic PlayStation antihero to life.
The series centers on Kratos and his young son Atreus as they embark on a perilous journey to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye—spreading her ashes from the highest peak. Along the way, monsters, gods, and ancient mythologies stand in their path. More importantly, the journey forces Kratos to confront something he has never truly mastered: fatherhood. As Kratos struggles to teach Atreus how to survive as a god, Atreus challenges his father to reconnect with his lost humanity.
Hurst is no stranger to the God of War universe. He previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök (2022), a performance that earned him a BAFTA nomination and praise from fans. That experience gives Hurst a unique familiarity with the franchise’s tone, lore, and emotional depth as he steps into the role of its central figure.
Born a Spartan and forged into a god through blood and betrayal, Kratos’ origins trace back to a brutal upbringing in a warrior culture. His rise to power came at a devastating cost after making a fatal pact with Ares, the Greek God of War—a decision that condemned him to a lifetime of violence, guilt, and vengeance.
Across more than a decade and ten games, Kratos carved his way through mortals, monsters, and gods alike, becoming one of gaming’s most recognizable characters. Defined by his stoicism, unmatched combat prowess, and deeply tragic past, Kratos’ evolution in the franchise’s most recent chapters introduced a new emotional core: his relationship with Atreus.
The Prime Video series will closely follow the narrative direction of the last two games, with the father-and-son dynamic serving as the emotional backbone of the story and marking a darker, more intimate chapter in the God of War saga.
Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) serves as showrunner and writer, with Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys) directing the first two episodes. Moore also executive produces alongside Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis are on board as co-executive producers.
Produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, God of War has already received a two-season order. Pre-production is currently underway in Vancouver, with additional casting announcements expected soon.
