Twisted Metal Returns: Season 3 Greenlit with a Brand-New Showrunner Taking the Wheel
Peacock is officially stepping back on the gas — Twisted Metal has been renewed for Season 3, promising another round of blood-splattered highways, weaponized vehicles, and outlaw insanity.
This time, a new captain is behind the wheel. David Reed (The Boys, The Magicians) is taking over as showrunner and executive producer, replacing series co-creator Michael Jonathan Smith, who’s stepping away from the franchise.
Inspired by the legendary PlayStation game series, Twisted Metal was originally developed by Smith along with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick — the duo behind Zombieland and Deadpool. The show delivers a mix of high-octane action, dark comedy, and brutal wasteland chaos.
Season 1 (2023) introduced us to John Doe — a fast-talking outcast who’s offered a shot at a better life if he delivers a mysterious package across a ravaged America. With axe-swinging thief Quiet at his side, he tears through marauders, freaks, and road warriors straight out of a gasoline-fueled fever dream.
Season 2, which dropped this summer, raises the stakes with the duo entering Calypso’s Twisted Metal Tournament — a death-match demolition derby filled with brand-new killers and twisted returning threats. John’s world gets even more chaotic when he reunites with his masked vigilante sister, Dollface.
The season ended with a full-scale war brewing between the Insiders and Outsiders, after Calypso framed John and Quiet for a massacre they didn’t commit — setting the stage for an explosive confrontation in Season 3.
The returning cast includes Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Seanoa, Will Arnett, and Anthony Carrigan, who continue to bring the series’ violent circus of characters to life.
Backed by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television, the series has become one of Peacock’s strongest performers. Season 2 has racked up 993 million minutes viewed, making it the streamer’s second highest-reaching returning scripted season.
Reviewer Daniel Kurland praised the action-packed brutality, writing that Season 2 “laps the first in every department” and finds the show’s perfect gear of “hyperbolized and hilarious vehicular violence.”
With a new showrunner and a war-torn wasteland ready to explode, Twisted Metal Season 3 is gearing up to be the bloodiest ride yet.
