‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ Slashes Back as a TV Series from ‘The Punisher’ Writers

Stieg Larsson’s landmark thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is once again being dragged back into the shadows—this time as a brutal new TV series commissioned by British broadcaster Sky, according to Variety.

The eight-episode Sky Original will be written and executive produced by Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher, Hannibal) and Angela LaManna (The Punisher, Channel Zero), signaling a darker, psychologically charged take on Larsson’s world of corruption, violence, and obsession.

Rather than a straight period retelling, the series will update the 2005 novel for the present day, staying rooted in the investigative DNA and damaged characters that made the book a global phenomenon—while leaning into themes that feel even more volatile and relevant now.

Production is set to begin this spring in Lithuania, with Left Bank Pictures (The Crown, Outlander) handling production. Executive producers include Andy Harries, Charlotte Moore, and John Phillips for Left Bank, alongside Sam Hoyle for Sky, Amy Pascal, and Scott Rudin.

The series will air on Sky across the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, while Sony Pictures Television will oversee international distribution. U.S. pre-sales are already underway.

At the heart of the story is disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist and antisocial hacker Lisbeth Salander, who are drawn into a decades-old mystery involving the disappearance of a young woman from a powerful family—uncovering a rot of violence, secrets, and systemic abuse buried deep beneath polite society.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo launched Larsson’s posthumous Millennium trilogy, followed by The Girl Who Played with Fire (2006) and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest (2007). The series later continued with new novels by David Lagercrantz and Karin Smirnoff.

The property has already seen multiple screen incarnations, including the 2009 Swedish adaptation starring Noomi Rapace and David Fincher’s 2011 American remake with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. Amazon previously announced its own TV take in 2020, but that project quietly died in development.

With Lightfoot and LaManna at the helm, Sky’s Dragon Tattoo aims to cut deeper—promising a hard-edged, modern descent into Larsson’s bleak, violent world.
