‘Crystal Lake’ Series Begins Filming Under Working Title ‘Mama’s Boy’

Production has officially kicked off on Crystal Lake, the highly anticipated Friday the 13th prequel series from Peacock and A24. Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane confirmed the news today, sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from set and noting that the series is filming under the tongue-in-cheek working title Mama’s Boy—a fitting nod to Jason Voorhees’ infamous mother.

“Production Day 1. It’s real, folks,” Kane wrote on Instagram, signaling the long-awaited return of the iconic slasher universe.

The first episode is being directed by Michael Lennox (Derry Girls), with Maceo Bishop (The Curse, The Watcher) serving as cinematographer.

Leading the cast is Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me, Freaks and Geeks), who stars as Pamela Voorhees—the original killer from the 1980 classic Friday the 13th. She’s joined by William Catlett (Abigail), Cameron Scoggins (Nashville), Devin Kessler (Godfather of Harlem), and Gwendolyn Sundstrom. Scoggins takes on the role of Officer Dorf, originally portrayed by Ron Millkie in the original film.

Cardellini’s version of Pamela Voorhees is described as “a mother who had given up a promising singing career to raise a special needs child, only to take a dark turn after the loss of her son.”

The eight-episode series will be directed by a lineup that includes Michael Lennox, Celine Held & Logan George (Caddo Lake), and Quyen Tran (The Pitt).

Crystal Lake marks the first major revival of the Friday the 13th franchise in over 16 years, finally moving forward after a long stretch of legal battles tied to the property’s rights. With production now underway, the series promises to dive deeper into the chilling origins of one of horror’s most legendary killers. Stay tuned for more as filming progresses.
