Crystal Lake Showrunner Hints at ‘Rivers of Blood’ in Next Year’s Friday the 13th Prequel

Filming has officially bled dry on A24’s Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, marking the franchise’s first true resurrection in nearly twenty years. Slashing its way onto Peacock next year, the series comes sharpened by showrunner Brad Caleb Kane—fresh off carving terror into HBO’s IT: Welcome to Derry. In other words: the lake is in dangerous hands.

So what’s bubbling under the surface? Kane tells Entertainment Weekly that Crystal Lake is less a standard slasher and more a paranoid, pressure-cooker psychological nightmare straight out of the gritty ’70s.

“It has all the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher,” he says. “There are rivers of blood in the show—ingenious kills, wild deaths, and murders—but everything is driven by character, theme, and the era.”

Kane dug deep into what birthed the original 1980 film: the mistrust of institutions, the feminist awakening, the raw cultural paranoia of the ’70s—and he’s channeling all of it into this prequel. Expect the vibe of a cult-classic thriller… but with the arterial spray turned up.

One thing he hints at with near-maniacal glee? Linda Cardellini—stepping into the iconic role of Pamela Voorhees—is apparently about to knock horror fans flat.

“She’s inconceivably brilliant,” Kane says. “People are going to be shocked.”

Callum Vinson suits up as young Jason Voorhees, with Cardellini leading the bloodline as Mrs. Voorhees. The series expands the mythology leading up to the 1980 massacre, giving fans a deeper look at the twisted roots of Camp Crystal Lake.

The cast also stacks up with William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Nick Cordileone as a newly reimagined Crazy Ralph, Danielle Kotch as Claudette, and Phoenix Parnevik as Barry—bringing classic characters back with fresh victims… err, faces.

Nancy Nagrant joins as Kay Christy, kin to the original Steve Christy, with Joy Suprano also stirring the lake’s dark waters.

The eight episodes are helmed by directors Michael Lennox (Derry Girls), Celine Held & Logan George (Caddo Lake), and Quyen Tran (The Pitt), who are poised to deliver something stylish, tense, and absolutely soaked in dread.

Crystal Lake is coming—and it sounds like it’s hungry.
