Viral Horror Hit ‘Good Boy’ Unleashes $2.2M at the Box Office

What started as a niche release for Good Boy—a haunted house horror flick told through the eyes of a very good (and very doomed?) dog—has exploded into a box office win, thanks to a trailer that caught fire online.

After going viral in August—racking up 2+ million views and spiking Google searches—IFC pivoted hard, expanding the film’s rollout from limited to 1,650 theaters nationwide. The result? A $2.2 million opening weekend and a seat at #9 on the domestic box office charts.

That makes Good Boy the second-biggest debut ever for IFC, trailing just behind Late Night With the Devil ($2.8M). Not bad for a low-budget haunted dog flick that wasn’t even supposed to go wide.

“It’s also IFC Entertainment’s third-best opening ever, counting RLJE’s Clown in a Cornfield,” Variety reported.

With VOD yet to drop (release date still under wraps), Good Boy’s big-screen buzz is likely to carry over into homes—where people may or may not be ready to watch a ghost story told from the perspective of man’s best friend.

So, what is Good Boy?

The feature debut from Ben Leonberg, Good Boy follows a loyal pup who moves with his owner, Todd, to a rural home—and quickly senses that something in the house isn’t right. Shadowy figures, flickering lights, and soul-sick spirits begin to close in, and it’s up to the dog to defend the human he loves… no matter the cost.

The movie stars Indy (Leonberg’s real-life dog), with supporting roles from Larry Fessenden (a horror legend in his own right), Shane Jensen, and Arielle Friedman. Leonberg co-wrote the script with Alex Cannon.

Critics Say It’s Not Just Another Haunted House Flick

In her review for Bloody Disgusting, Meagan Navarro says:

Good Boy is packed with shadowed corners, flickering lights, tormented ghosts, and even doggy nightmares… but it’s not really a haunted house story. Leonberg crafts a thoughtful, unnerving, and heartrending portrayal of how terrifying it can be for a dog when his world is upended.”

Expect scares, sadness, and some gut punches—especially for animal lovers.

Final Bite:

Between a viral marketing push, indie horror pedigree, and a fresh twist on the haunted house formula, Good Boy proves you don’t need a huge budget to make a big impact—just a loyal companion, a few ghosts, and a well-timed growl.

Keep your eye on this one when it hits VOD. Just maybe don’t watch it with your dog in the room.
