Well, this year America’s Independence Day celebrations will last for numerous days as it takes place on a Friday, leaving room for a weekend of fun and chaos! Which is why we, at GoreCulture, recommend some fun horror films that take place during the summertime that you can divulge during your Fourth of July picnics.
#5: Jaws

To kick off this list at number 5 is everyone’s favorite shark, Jaws. Taking place in the middle of summer, Jaws wreaks havoc on those entering his watery domain. The synopsis for Jaws reads as, “When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.”
#4: Final Destination 3

The third installment of Final Destination is without a doubt a scary one that makes all lovers of amusement parks and rollercoasters rethink that love. Taking place in the summer, and having a Fourth of July-like celebration, this film not only introduces unique kills, but also increases your fears of such things like tanning beds. The synopsis for Final Destination 3 reads as, “Six years after a group of high-school students first cheated death, another teen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has a premonition that she and her friends will be involved in a horrifying roller-coaster accident. When the vision proves true, the student and her fellow survivors must deal with the repercussions of cheating the Grim Reaper.”
#3: Sleepaway Camp

Sleepaway Camp both starts and ends with a shocking bang. Obviously taking place at a summer camp, Angela Baker is picked on and bullied, but she always was one step ahead of the campers and had the final laugh. This film was a very campy, low-budget masterpiece that spanned a couple of sequels, as well. Its synopsis reads, “Bunks and the showers are a mad stabber’s beat at a summer camp strictly for teens.”
#2: I Know What You Did Last Summer

A film that showcases the now ever popular Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillipe, as well as featuring Roseanne‘s Johnny Galecki, this film with big named actors has to be on the list. Not only is it a terrific slasher film, it also takes place on the Fourth of July itself. With several sequels, and a new film coming out in July 2025, this film without a doubt lives on in all horror fans film collection. The synopsis for I Know What You Did Last Summer reads as, “A year after running over a fisherman and dumping his body in the water, four friends reconvene when Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) receives a frightening letter telling her that their crime was seen. While pursuing who he thinks is responsible for the letter, Barry (Ryan Phillippe) is run over by a man with a meat hook. The bloodletting only increases from there, as the killer with the hook continues to stalk Julie, Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.).”
#1: Friday the 13th

An instant classic, Friday the 13th spanned ten sequels, a crossover with A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Freddy Krueger, and a remake in 2009, yet this film that was released in 1980 and is a summer camp slasher doesn’t even feature the horror icon everyone has come to know and love, Jason Voorhees. Instead, Jason’s mother, Mrs. Voorhees, is the antagonist of this film and is slashing her way through the infamous Camp Crystal Lake to avenge her son, Jason, who died as a boy at that very summer camp. This film’s synopsis reads as, “Crystal Lake’s history of murder doesn’t deter counselors from setting up a summer camp in the woodsy area. Superstitious locals warn against it, but the fresh-faced young people — Jack (Kevin Bacon), Alice (Adrienne King), Bill (Harry Crosby), Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) and Ned (Mark Nelson) — pay little heed to the old-timers. Then they find themselves stalked by a brutal killer. As they’re slashed, shot and stabbed, the counselors struggle to stay alive against a merciless opponent.”
