Sleepaway Camp creator Robert Hiltzik has officially finished the script for the long-awaited remake of his 1983 cult slasher, marking the first major step toward a blood-soaked return to one of horror’s most infamous summer destinations.

AFA—the production banner run by “SNL” veteran Kenan Thompson and Johnny Ryan Jr. (Bill & Ted Face the Music, Good Burger 2)—is steering the new incarnation. The company announced the milestone on Instagram with a perfectly sinister nod to the original: “Attention campers, our script has arrived. Please meet us at the waterfront after the social for a table read.” They followed it up with a tease every horror fan wants to hear: “Casting notices coming soon.”

Hiltzik isn’t just writing—he’s stepping back behind the camera to direct, promising a version that honors the original’s razor-sharp spirit while carving out new surprises for returning fans and fresh victims alike.

The film is stacked with producers Robinson Velasco, Monica Weber, Cory Litwin, and Boris Shvarts, while Range Select will handle sales as the project heats up.

Hiltzik previously said he’s “thrilled and humbled” to be returning to Camp Arawak, adding that AFA was the only company that matched his vision and commitment to preserving the warped charm and integrity of the original while introducing Sleepaway Camp to a new generation.

Infamous for one of horror’s most jaw-dropping finales, the 1983 film followed a mysterious killer slicing through kids and counselors during a seemingly innocent summer getaway. With the remake officially moving forward, fans can expect the campfires to burn brighter—and deadlier—than ever.
