‘The Revenge of La Llorona’ – Sequel to ‘The Curse of La Llorona’ Finally Rising from the Depths

The Weeping Woman is back to haunt a new generation. A long-awaited sequel to 2019’s The Curse of La Llorona—titled The Revenge of La Llorona—has officially begun filming this week in New York, marking the long-delayed return of one of Latin American folklore’s most chilling spirits.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cast includes Jay Hernandez (Hostel), Monica Raymund, Edy Ganem (9-1-1), Martín Fajardo (Griselda), Acston Luca Porto (Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado), and Avie Porto (Bob Hearts Abishola). They join returning star Raymond Cruz (Breaking Bad, Alien: Resurrection), reprising his role as curandero Rafael Olvera.

The sequel’s story finds a fractured family forced to reunite with their estranged grandfather when La Llorona returns to claim their children. As the ancient evil resurfaces, they must confront buried trauma and ancestral secrets before the Weeping Woman drags them all into her cursed embrace.

Taking over the director’s chair from The Curse of La Llorona’s Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Last Rites) is filmmaker Santiago Menghini, who made his feature debut with the 2021 Netflix horror No One Gets Out Alive. The sequel’s screenplay comes from Sean Tretta, who’s also collaborating with James Wan on Universal’s upcoming Creature from the Black Lagoon project.

Speaking of Wan, he’s back on board as producer alongside Gary Dauberman and Emile Gladstone, reuniting the core creative team behind the first film.

When The Curse of La Llorona released in 2019, it earned over $123 million worldwide, defying its mixed reviews and proving the enduring power of folk horror. The follow-up has been in limbo for years—shelved multiple times, most recently in early 2024—but according to THR, the recent box office success of Final Destination: Bloodlines has rekindled studio faith in horror sequels.

The original film was set in 1973 Los Angeles, following social worker Anna Tate-Garcia (Linda Cardellini) as she battled La Llorona’s deadly curse after ignoring the warnings of a desperate mother.

Now, with The Revenge of La Llorona, the legend rises again—stronger, darker, and ready to reclaim what was once hers.
